“To benefit society through charity” is one of the objectives of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, continuing the commitment to the local community in times of urgent needs. In just a few short months, COVID-19 has grown into a global pandemic. In Ontario, healthcare systems are overwhelmed and over thousand of lives have already been lost due to the virus. Our Temple has setup “COVID-19 Emergency Fund” and in April, has donated the following items to two medical establishments:
1. One ventilator ($53,000) donated to Scarborough Health Network (SHN);
2. An amount of $25,000 was donated to Trillium Health Partners Foundation to be used to purchase protective gears and the needed medical items for the frontline workers.
Our Temple and the BLIA of Toronto were notified in late March that the Scarborough General Hospital, Centenary Hospital, Birchmount Hospital and Scarborough Health Network were calling on the community for help as there was an urgent need of the medical equipment such as respirators, ECG monitor, vital sign monitors, ICU beds, saline machines, and hemodialysis machines.
The proposed donation of the ventilator to the Scarborough Hospital Network not only received unanimous approval from the Board of Directors of BLIA Toronto, the motion also received enormous support from the International BLIA Headquarter and was funded by the “Buddha's Light International Association Emergency Relief Fund”. In recognition of the generosity, the International Buddha's Light Association of Toronto has been included in the sponsoring list on the home page of the Scarborough Health Network Foundation's official website; and the name of the Association will also be engraved on the wall of the newly completed Medical Imaging and Vascular X-ray waiting room at the Scarborough Hospital.
