True to its roots in the traditions of Mayahana Buddism, Fo Guang Shan Temple acts as an important cultural and spiritual centre, bridging people of different backgrounds in the local community to promote overall well-being and harmony. This English language class introduces core ideas of Buddhist training and philosophy. It is designed for learners of all kinds of cultural and religious backgrounds.
The class includes stress reduction meditation to help improve quality of life, which is useful to those in any walk of life and any profession. Meditation helps to develop inner peace, wisdom and a more positive attitude. It teaches us to overcome difficulties with the right attitude and mindset, thereby reducing unnecessary pain and suffering.
The class also offers instruction in core Buddhist teachings by one of our Venerables, providing knowledge and insight on how to apply Buddhist ideas to daily life. Buddhism is not taught as a religion, but as a method of training the mind in ways that improve our ability to handle situations, overcome obstacles and find the happiness all beings deserve and can attain.
The founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, established the following four guiding principles for all members of the temple, both monastics and lay devotees:
Offer others confidence
Offer others happiness
Offer others hope
Offer others convenience
This class is offered freely to the local community in the spirit of these principles. The class's objectives focus on nurturing potential talents of students, serving the community with compassion, practicing Buddhism to purify one's mind and building the future with a bold spirit of vitality.
